Leaving the waterhole
Leaving the waterhole
Title: Leaving the waterhole
Location: Etosha National Park, Namibia
Photographer: Graham Elliott
I was lucky enough to see a lot of elephants in Etosha. Not all of them were close to us, but we did have some memorable encounters. This waterhole was one of them and we watched them for a while before they gradually moved off in small groups.
This photograph might look a little add as there is a definite cloud around the four on the left. This is caused by them picking up soil and dust from the ground as they walk and spraying it over themselves. They do this to protect their hides, which can be quite sensitive in places, from the sun and parasites.
I try to avoid photographing animals from behind as it’s more difficult to connect with them when viewing the photograph, but I thought that this was worth sharing.
